Figurative seated Jizo Bosatsu sculpted with rough-hewn simplicity from a heavy stone of volcanic origin, the hands pressed pointedly together in the gassho adoration mudra. Early-Edo Period ca. 1650, possibly earlier. Very minor old loss. The whitish patch on the figure's lower right side is not a repair but rather an extrusion of a different type of stone, a phenomenon not uncommon in cases of heat-forged stone types. Black-soot accumulation, particularly on the head, testifies to centuries of devotional usage during which the entire figure except for the head was draped with a garment and thus partially shielded from the smoke of burning candles and incense. Height: 15.5 cm Jizo Bosatsu as aesthetic lump with orbicular head and pyramidal hands: a charming reminder of traditional Japan's significant contribution to Western modernist aesthetics. Extremely uncommon. |
