Stone hoju (sacred jewel) atop a lotus-form dais supported by a hexagonal base. Early-Edo Period ca. 1650. Minor old loss. Height: 29.0 cm Sometimes held in the hands of Jizo Bosatsu and without exception placed atop stone lanterns and pagodas, the hoju is perhaps the most widely employed attribute in the Japanese Buddhist stone tradition. Sculpted from a hard, heavy volcanic stone, this hoju originally crowned an elaborate funerary monument. For another example of a stone hoju, please see our stock #21. |
