Ushi-nori (Cow-Riding) Dai-Nichi Buddha figuratively sculpted from tuff, the hands forming the chi-ken-in knowledge fist mudra. Mid-Edo Period ca. 1750. Old loss, most notably to the cow's horns and left foreleg. Good lichen accumulation. Height: 37 cm A well-executed depiction of Ushi-nori Dai-Nichi Buddha, sculptural depictions of which are exceedingly uncommon. |
