$950

We are proud to offer this original preliminary ink sketch by the famed American illustrator Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944), the creator of the Gibson Girl. He first came to eminence as the foremost magazine illustrator of his time in the late 19th century, later in life he turned completely to painting. His long and illustrious career takes more room than alloted here to discuss, and is well covered elsewhere on the Internet. This item is a 22" x 15-1/2" preliminary ink study on paper of his "The Weaker Sex" illustration. The hair is done in characteristic fashion but the inking is more simplistic, and the magnifying glass is not as finely detailed as in the final work, which in the final version has a fourth woman in the upper right hand corner. His signature (Charles Gibson) is visible in the shadow area beneath the arm of the woman holding the magnifying glass. On the back of the drawing No. 84 and Mrs (or Miss) Drew is written in pencil. Besides the fact that he apparently was working out the details of the shadows under the arm, he most likely deliberately drew lines over the signature as this piece does not have the perfection of his finished work. The paper is a slightly heavy thickness of sketch pad paper; it is framed in a black-painted wood frame with gilding (minor paint spots and a couple of dings to the frame). Some notes on condition: there are some creases, a tear in the upper left, a few scratches to the paper surface, some brown foxing and some spotting and a water stain on the right hand side. A rarity and an interesting example of a great work in progress. This item is in very good original condition with the condition issued noted above. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Securely packed surface shipping to the continental U.S. is $35 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US.

$350

A fine quality late 18th century copper plate etching by Francesco Londonio (1723-1783) of Milan, Italy. This Georgian period etching is from the Costumes Pastoris (Pastoral Customs or more commonly, Pastoral Scenes ) series. Image size (taken from the plate indentation lines) is 36 cm. x 27 cm. (14-1/4" x 11"). This series was produced for Consigliere Mellerio. This item is in the collection of the National Digital Library in Portugal, and a collection of Londonio's etchings resides at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco (F.A.M.S.F.), amongst others, and there are some etchings from this specific series in the F.A.M.S.F. collection. The F.A.M.S.F. dates this series to the 18th century. It has an 8 in the lower right corner, indicating that this is plate 8 in the series. It is housed in a later 19th century black finished wood frame measuring 21-5/8" x 18-1/2", and it is in very good original condition with no cracks, tears, repairs, losses, damage or repairs other than some very fine overall speckled foxing and a central crease. Surface shipping (securely packed) to the U.S. starts at $29 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $95 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US. PLEASE NOTE: We DO NOT ACCEPT Paypal.

$395

A lovely early 20th century scenic watercolour painting by the listed British artist Edwin St. John (1878-1961). This painting measures 20-3/4" x 14-1/4" and it depicts a wonderful panoramic hillside view overlooking Lake Lugano in Italy with a town in the background ("Scene of Lake Lugano" hand written in pencil on back). Mountains rise up on the horizon under a partly cloudy sky, and the detail, lighting and composition are all top-notch, with vivid colours in front and atmospheric detail as the distance recedes. This painting is being sold unmatted and unframed; it is currently on foam-core with temporary mounts and it will be properly and securely packed for shipping. This item is in very good original condition with no scrapes, tears, fading, losses, damage or repairs other than the following: there is some soiling/foxing to the white clouds, there are a couple of shallow paper blisters near the top (shown sidelit in the last image) and a very slight touch of rubbing and a small corner bump along the lower edge from a previous mat. A beautiful painting ready for conservation and framing. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface shipping starts at $22 (to the US - other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card; credit card items will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. $149

A nicely carved green soapstone native Canadian tribal carving in the form of a polar bear next to a wall/rock. The wall part has two holes carved in the top, we assume for use as a desk pen stand. This 3-3/4" wide, 2-5/8" tall and 4" deep sculpture has nice colour and stone figuring, and it has an applied tape label stating: MADE BY ELIGAH ALLISPPI BOUGHT AT MOOSONEE IN AUG 1981. Moosonee is located in Northern Ontario, just a few miles from James Bay. The piece itself is otherwise unsigned and it is in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks, losses, damage or repairs other than some traces from removed stickers on the top (easily buffed). There is a fine surface stress crack in the stone visible around the bear's neck, but it is original to the stone, not damage. Surface shipping starts at $24 - it is heavy (to the US - other spots may vary) - insurance and tracking included in shipping. Items paid by credit card shipped to a confirmed address only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US. PLEASE NOTE: We DO NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL, ONLY VISA AND MASTERCARD.

$125 pair

A beautifully painted pair of framed watercolour photo renderings c1880-1900. They consist of a young man and woman in mid-Victorian dress; each image is done on Victorian photographic print paper and they measure 6-3/4" x 4-3/4". It was common to overpaint old and fading photographs, however these are of such fine quality and detail that they were most likely done from a mirrored projection, another common method of photographic rendering (we can't find any photographic detail under the painting with visual magnification). Each has the legend J. POWELL PHOTO on the image (even the J Powell is over-painted). The frames are an attractive matched pair of gilt painted wood, but are fairly recent in manufacture - the pictures were framed and matted less than 20 years ago. The couple is quite handsome, and they can be your new instant ancestors.... This pair of watercolour portraits is in very good original condition with no losses, damage or repairs other than a faint water stain and a couple of fox marks on the lady and some spots of missing colour on the gentleman (possibly from removal from some old glass to which the photo/picture had adhered). Each has been recently reframed and matted, and the spots on the man could be restored. Surface shipping starts at $24 (to the US - other spots may vary) - insurance and tracking included in shipping quotes. We do ship internationally. PLEASE NOTE: We DO NOT accept Paypal.
