A stipple engraving by C. Knight (engraver, printseller 1743-1826) c1785, that depicts a young Lady Georgiana Cavendish (1783-1858), after a painting by Thomas Hardy (1757-1805). Lady Georgiana (1783-1858) was the daughter of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire and Lady Georgiana Spencer, Duchess of Devonshire. Her mother was a celebrated beauty and society leader of her day, and has been recently portrayed in the movie The Duchess - she was also an ancestor of Princess Diana. Lady Georgiana Cavendish married George Howard, the 6th Earl of Carlisle and they had 12 children (she was then known as Lady Georgiana Morpeth, Countess of Carlisle). The print has printed on the bottom: PAINTED BY T. HARDY, ENGRAVED BY C. KNIGHT, LADY GEORGIANA CAVENDISH DAUGHTER OF HIS GRACE THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE and LONDON, PUBLISH'D MAY 16TH, 1785 BY WM. AUSTIN, DRAWING MASTER &c. AT THE PATRIOTIC PRINT ROOMS. No.41. St. JAMES'S STREET. William Austin was an engraver, print seller and drawing master, and he ran Patriotic Print Rooms at St. James's Street in 1785. Charles Knight was an engraver and print publisher, and may possibly have been a pupil of Bartolozzi. This print has a site size of 8-3/4" x 11-3/4" (to outer plate impression) and it is in a later (c.1900) painted and gilt 14-3/4" x 11-3/8" frame. This item is in excellent original condition with no rips, holes, foxing, staining, tears, losses, damage or repairs other than a gesso loss to the frame. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface shipping to the continental U.S. starts at $16 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. An unusual and early, hand tinted lithograph print titled "Washington Family", by Nathaniel Currier before his partnership with James Ives. From the 2 Spruce St. era (1838-56), this 13" x 8-1/2" small folio print (image size only) comes in a late 19th century mahogany veneer frame. This print is signed "WASHINGTON FAMILY. GEORGE WASHINGTON HIS LADY & TWO GRANDCHILDERN (sic) BY THE NAMES OF CUSTIS." It also states "LITH. & PUB. BY N. CURRIER 2 SPRUCE ST N.Y." This print has hand colouring, including a green tree, George's cuff and Martha's dress, a blue coat and drape on the male grandchild, yellow trim on the chairs, epaulets, table drape and buttonholes, faint yellow on the granddaughter's dress, and small touches of pink on the upholstery. This image is different from some of the later Currier & Ives prints of this subject, and this unusual Ives print is in excellent original condition with no tears, foxing, staining or other damage, with only slight losses to the frame veneer, some yellowing of the paper, and a small white spot on the paper's margin and beside the girl's head where the paper hasn't yellowed. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface expedited tracked shipping to the U.S. begins at $26 (other spots may vary) - insurance/tracking included in shipping quotes.
