A stipple engraving by C. Knight (engraver, printseller 1743-1826) c1785, that depicts a young Lady Georgiana Cavendish (1783-1858), after a painting by Thomas Hardy (1757-1805). Lady Georgiana (1783-1858) was the daughter of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire and Lady Georgiana Spencer, Duchess of Devonshire. Her mother was a celebrated beauty and society leader of her day, and has been recently portrayed in the movie The Duchess - she was also an ancestor of Princess Diana. Lady Georgiana Cavendish married George Howard, the 6th Earl of Carlisle and they had 12 children (she was then known as Lady Georgiana Morpeth, Countess of Carlisle). The print has printed on the bottom: PAINTED BY T. HARDY, ENGRAVED BY C. KNIGHT, LADY GEORGIANA CAVENDISH DAUGHTER OF HIS GRACE THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE and LONDON, PUBLISH'D MAY 16TH, 1785 BY WM. AUSTIN, DRAWING MASTER &c. AT THE PATRIOTIC PRINT ROOMS. No.41. St. JAMES'S STREET. William Austin was an engraver, print seller and drawing master, and he ran Patriotic Print Rooms at St. James's Street in 1785. Charles Knight was an engraver and print publisher, and may possibly have been a pupil of Bartolozzi. This print has a site size of 8-3/4" x 11-3/4" (to outer plate impression) and it is in a later (c.1900) painted and gilt 14-3/4" x 11-3/8" frame. This item is in excellent original condition with no rips, holes, foxing, staining, tears, losses, damage or repairs other than a gesso loss to the frame. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface shipping to the continental U.S. starts at $16 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US. NOTE: we do not accept PayPal.
