Formerly on our "what is it?" shelf, we have finally identified this unusual Victorian object. It is actually a Victorian lady's hem lifter. In the Aesthetic style popular in the 1880s, this solid brass clothing accessory clamps the bottom of the lady's dress with the tongs, which are locked in place by the sliding shield-shaped housing. A cord looped through a (now missing) brass loop at the top of the slider is pulled to raise the hem of the floor-length skirt. It has the word PATENT on the tongs, and this unusual item is in excellent original condition with no dents, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than the missing loop and some minor bending of the shield edges. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface shipping to the continental U.S. is $5.50 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US.

A well made English sterling thimble in its original fitted box, fully hallmarked Birmingham, England 1923-4. This 7/8" high and 5/8" across thimble is stamped with the hallmarks, the maker's mark H.G&S (Henry Griffith & Sons), and the size 13. It has a high relief flower band design, and the 1-1/8 x 15/16" carboard box is stamped GOLDSMITH & JEWELLER W. AUSTIN BALSAM 14, KING STREET. READING. This thimble appears unused and mint in the box, and it retains its tarnish, which we haven't cleaned. This item is in excellent original condition with no scrapes, dents, monograms, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than a bit of rubbing on the top of the box. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted. Surface shipping is $5.50 (to the US - other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US.
