An unusual vintage English stoneware tankard made by Doulton Lambeth c1914. This 4" high mug has a nice mocha and chocolate colour body with applied raised green decoration and a thick applied strap handle. It has the motto "Bitter must be the cup that a smile will not sweeten", and it has the mark in use from 1891-1956, as well as the 7780 number corresponding to 1914. This is a partial set of 51 pieces of English mid-19th century (or earlier) heavy ironstone dinnerware, made by Real Stone China in the pattern number 142. Decoration is in the Imari palette, and the company remains unidentified as does the date of production.
