A superb, unusual vintage Georgian whiskey or ale cask figural string holder c1800s-30s. String was a valuable and useful item in the Georgian home, and this holder could also have held embroidery thread for sewing. A seldom seen late Georgian papier-mache bobbin case or holder c1830. This oval 3-1/8" x 1-1/8" holder stands 1-1/2" high, and it has the original silver metal hinge (not tested). It is in fairly good condition, but does have some condition issues. It has some rubbing of the black finish on the edges, the loss of a tiny brass or ivory or silver insert on the lid, some cracking and loss to the snap catch surround on the lid and some loss under the hinge on the interior.
