Rare SS REX OCEAN LINER LITHOGRAPH Advertisement c1930s

A scarce travel or shipping advertising item for your collection or display. This is a framed multicolour lithograph of the Italia line SS Rex ocean liner c1930s. Built in 1930 and launched in 1931 for Navigazione Generale Italiana with accommodation for over 2200, it then became part of the Flotte Riuniti line in 1932 with a route to North and South America. Considered one of the most beautiful liners and holder of the Blue Riband from 1933 until 1935 (awarded to the ship with the fastest crossing time), she last sailed in 1940, and she was bombed and sunk by the British in 1944; she was scrapped in 1947. Any items from this short-lived vessel are quite scarce, and this is a 20" x 16" full colour lithograph, most likely originating in a travel agency. It features the S.S. Rex under full steam, and the 21-1/2" x 17-3/4" gilt wood and gesso frame is contemporary with the early 1930s litho. The print is in very good condition with no losses; it is somewhat yellowed, and it has some minor creasing on the left, center and right where it may have been rolled before being framed. Only the central crease shows white paper, and there is some water staining on the right quarter of the print and on the left hand margin (visible on the sky and not deeply affecting the image which remains crisp). The frame may have been regilded, and it has a small plaster loss on the upper right corner. There is a small applied crown sticker, and a title strip pasted on the bottom saying S.A. ARTI GRAPHICHE BERTARELLI (both original). Surface shipping starts at $32 (to the US - other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card.
