BOXED 26 PC. STERLING MOP DESSERT SET c1867

A superb quality, complete and boxed mother-of-pearl handled dessert service for 12 with servers with sterling blades, hallmarked 1866-67. Made by Mappin & Webb in Sheffield, England in 1866-7, this set has a few features setting it apart from the majority of these sets: it has a fine walnut and burl walnut veneer fitted velvet lined double-rack wooden box with lock, it has a large matching cake serving knife and fork (rarely seen in these sets) and the blades are solid, hallmarked sterling silver with fine ornate engraving and silver ferrules. The handles are thick, finely modelled, colourful and irridescent mother of pearl. The pieces include 12 dessert knives (8-3/8"), 12 dessert forks (6-7/8"), one 10-7/8" serving knife and one 8-1/2" serving fork. The 14" x 10-3/4" walnut box features burl walnut veneer on the top, which has a gilt shield, which has not ever been monogrammed, but has a few surface scratches. It has gilt brass fittings and an intact lock (no key but if we find a match we'll include it). It has the expected black varnished paper bottom. Interestingly, the two serving pieces were made by Hy. Wilkinson of London, England in 1866-7 although they are clearly a part if this fitted set - they have identical engraving, ferrules and handles to match the rest of the set, as well as matching monograms. Each piece has a great fancy Gothic JFB monogram, and this elegant set is in excellent original condition with no losses, damage or repairs other than some slight fine denting to 4 of the knife edges (expected with soft sterling silver), one re-glued mother-of-pearl finial on one fork, a small tear to the velvet in the top rack, and some cracks and a small loss to the veneer on the top of the case from shrinkage over the last 140 years. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface shipping to the continental U.S. is $18 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US.
