| This is a Pre-Columbian MAYAN Face from Mexico, 300 - 900 A.D. It measures about 1" X 3/4" X 1 1/4" ( 2.6 cm X 1.9 cm X 3.2 cm ). The Mayan art of their Classic Era has high level of aesthetics and artisanal sophistication. Their paintings, carvings, and reliefs show grace and accurate observation of their life. The Mayan extended throughout the present-day Mexican Estates of Chiapas, Tabasco, and the Yucatan Peninsula ( Quintana Roo, Campeche, and Yucatan )and reached other regions of the present-day Guatemala, Belize, Northern El Salvador, and Western Honduras. The Mayan rulers were considered divine beings. Their religious ceremonies included the ball game, human sacrifices, and blood-letting ceremonies in which nobels pierced their tongues and genitals to shed blood as offerings to their gods. | ||
