Maxfield Parrish was an American painter and illustrator, born in Philadelphia, PA, in 1870. He started drawing as a growing child and his parents supported his talent. His father was an engraver and landscape artist. Maxfield's real name was Frederick Parrish. He adopted the name Maxfield Parrish from his paternal grandmother's maiden name. He used that name professionally. He attended Haverford College and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His career lasted more than 50 years and his art helped shape the Golden Age of illustration and the future of American visual arts. His works feature luminous colors. He used the technique called Glazing where bright layers of oil color separated by varnish were applied alternately over a base rendering. He generally used a blue and white monochromatic underpaint. | ||
