The pedestal foot vessel carved with guilloche patterns and images of pangolin (manis tricuspis). A deep, blackish brown patina covers the entire vessel, especially the interior, and the surface on the exterior is smooth and shiny from much handling. The contents of such a small container must have been quite potent and special. Early 20th century from D.R.Congo, Central Africa. 5" in height, and in mint condition. Provenance: collection of Peter Pollack, NY and Fl, since the early 1960' ...click for details

The bush pig, found in the forested regions of West Africa, most likely spawned the use of this type of zoomorphic face mask among the Northern Dan peoples. This animal was the preferred food source at one time in areas free of Muslim influence. However, this mask might have been part of Islamized peoples who used it during masquerades celebrating the end of ramadan, much like the 'do' society warthog masks made by the Ligbi in Ivory Coast. The skin-covered mask traditions found throughout the Cross River area of Nigeria, West Africa were eagerly adopted by the Bangwa, living wholly inside the country of Cameroon. Created for royal masquerades, these Janus faced helmet masks could be quite powerful and haunting, as seen in this old example. This is a classic example of the type, made from the core section of a single piece of dense wood, then covered with the hide of an antelope, painted and further embellished with bits of mirror. ...click for details

The Konda of central D.R.Congo made ornate and eccentrically shaped sword blades for non-combative use. They were indications of their owner's social rank, created simply for prestigious qualities. This excellent example is made from copper and has a wooden handle with iron strapping to further accentuate its pinched form. Late 19th century. Very fine condition with aged patina. Provenance: Old Dutch collection since the 1950's

A heavy knob of iron has been added to the pommel of this elegant blade. The owner of this particular weapon was prestigious enough to have copper added to the handle grip. Hand-held weapons are found in all regions of Africa, but their possession was regulated by strict codes, allowing only tribal and military chiefs the right to carry them or dispense them. A wonderfully refined example. D.R.Congo, late 19th century, measuring 15"L x 4.75"W, maximum. In very fine condition with some ...click for details
