Heavily-potted, solid, fired clay figures, such as these two examples, were made as portraits of deceased royal family members - kings and queen-mothers (seated figure, here) as well as members of their courts (standing figure, here). This type of figure ranges in age from the early 18th C. through the early 20th C. CE, when increasing pressure from colonial missionaries and officers ceased production. Many western Akan (Anyi) region terracottas are thought to be physical likenesses of those who ...click for details

This type of 'Do' mask embodies concepts of supernatural forces which are not visible in this world. The Bwa name for such a vertical mask is "bayiri", and a female gender is assigned to the mask type. These abstracted forms are not intended to look like anything in particular, with surface decoration, as described by Coquet and Regis in Emily Hanna-Vergara's 1996 dissertation, "deliberately conceived as an esoteric text whose vivid graphic language is derived from de ...click for details

The messenger of the gods, Esu, is the subject matter of this fine dance staff figure. Among Yoruba peoples, Esu was the mediator between the spiritual world and the real world. He is believed to bring riches and good fortune to those who follow a sacrificial way of life. If treated properly, he delivers human requests to the gods, but, if mistreated, he can create a chaotic and scrambled message which wreaks havoc. This is a superb and old example showing much use and loving care. He is adorned ...click for details

The Konda of central D.R.Congo made ornate and eccentrically shaped sword blades for non-combative use. They were indications of their owner's social rank, created simply for prestigious qualities. This excellent example is made from copper and has a wooden handle with iron strapping to further accentuate its pinched form. Late 19th century. Very fine condition with aged patina. Provenance: Old Dutch collection since the 1950's

In the Cameroon grasslands, pipes were both status symbols and cult objects. During harvesting, clearing and planting times, pipe smoking was encouraged since smoke was believed to promote fertility. Anthropomorphic bowls were never for the common man, whether of metal or clay. Earthenware examples were made by hand-modeling the material, allowing it to dry in the sun, then further decorating the work with red camwood powder in the final firing. Many of these bowls, especially more elaborate and ...click for details

A heavy knob of iron has been added to the pommel of this elegant blade. The owner of this particular weapon was prestigious enough to have copper added to the handle grip. Hand-held weapons are found in all regions of Africa, but their possession was regulated by strict codes, allowing only tribal and military chiefs the right to carry them or dispense them. A wonderfully refined example. D.R.Congo, late 19th century, measuring 15"L x 4.75"W, maximum. In very fine condition with some ...click for details

An early example of tourist art created by Africans in the 19th century for sale to Europeans. These beautifully arranged, spiraling processions of humans, and sometimes animals, were made by professional ivory carvers whose artistic roots were in the traditional themes and forms of their culture. The figures portrayed here show both men and women wearing native and western outfits and "reflect the artist's efforts to come to terms with the cultural changes of his time." (Kecskesi, ...click for details
