The Konda of central D.R.Congo made ornate and eccentrically shaped sword blades for non-combative use. They were indications of their owner's social rank, created simply for prestigious qualities. This excellent example is made from copper and has a wooden handle with iron strapping to further accentuate its pinched form. Late 19th century. Very fine condition with aged patina. Provenance: Old Dutch collection since the 1950's

A heavy knob of iron has been added to the pommel of this elegant blade. The owner of this particular weapon was prestigious enough to have copper added to the handle grip. Hand-held weapons are found in all regions of Africa, but their possession was regulated by strict codes, allowing only tribal and military chiefs the right to carry them or dispense them. Eccentric form supposedly used to execute criminals and captive enemies. A fine, truly heavy, sharp example which would do the trick~ Blade is in fine, well-preserved condition. wooden sword handle has suffered some insect damage in the distant past leaving one side of the grip (second knob)with loss forming a cavity. A hard to find weapon made by a small, Muslimized group living in Togo, West Africa. Leather work is reminiscent of the Tuareg peoples of Niger and Mauritania. Please refer to 'Buschan', Volkerkunde, p.494, for the type. From the late 19th century. Made of bronze and iron with a dyed and tooled leather sheath. 12.50"L (dagger inside sheath).
