This enigmatic figure, possibly a male or female, has a howler monkey face and a fully human body. Whether it portrays a masked individual or an envisioned concept of ritual transformation is unclear. A thick, twisted cloth is seen hanging from around the neck, ending in a tassel and overlays a bib-like garment painted in 'Maya blue' pigment applied to the ceramic after firing. Post-fire yellow pigment is strong and well-preserved, as well. The figure holds a rattle in its right hand, su ...click for details

Three mold-impressed panels decorate the sides of this small and delicate, but important vase from the Terminal Late Classic period, circa CE early 9th century. Each shows the repeated image of the Vision Serpent, 'Och Chan', with mouth agape, snout curled back, surrounded by feathers and small circular designs symbolizing sacredness and precious liquid. A prominent mirror or 'Nen' sign glyph can be seen above the eye of the serpent, indicating not only is this a god-like deity, ...click for details

This small mask created for use among male and female members of the Bwami Society is carved from a dense, heavy wood and shows ample traces of white kaolin encrustation across the concave facial plane. Bulging eyes are slit open to the back and the long nose has pierced nostrils. A slightly prognathous mouth has been cut through, and a series of rhythmically placed holes, created by the heated tip of a metal tool, surround the face region. Larger, pierced holes are present around the entire rim ...click for details

Wearing a traditional crown style 'kufi' cap, this male torso with perforated base appears to have been used as a puppet (maani), and was probably once part of a larger masquerade assemblage used in the Sogo bo theater. Carved by a village blacksmith in the Segou Region, Mali, early 20th century, 20"H.
Made of a tight-grained wood with very fine, shiny, medium brown, aged patina. There are finely-incised designs across the face, head, and torso. Condition is very good with old dama ...click for details

An older tupilak sculpture, carved from whale ivory, representing a skeletal anthropomorphic figure locked in an embrace with a polar bear, each seemingly struggling to beat the other. Originally, these were magical creations associated with witchcraft and malevolent activity to destroy an enemy. Since the late 19th C, and particularly into the 20th C, their use has been tailored more to fantasy sculpture for a souvenir market. This example dates to the early 20th C, and was obtained from an ol ...click for details

Fine example of the 'Great Spirit', known as "Orebuko-Okoto" by the peoples living in the Bidjogo Islands off the coast of Guinea, West Africa. These rarely seen figures are carved of one piece of wood with a hollowed middle, cylindrical in form, which received sacrificial materials. A sensitively carved head with metal eyes and applied textile and hair above a long, ringed neck. Such figures are attended by a priestess and kept on a shrine altar. Early 20th C, 23"H x 7.25 ...click for details

A sacred fish is seen on the tondo of this deep plate with tripod feet. The way in which it is portrayed is similar to fish seen in the watery Underworld on Maya ceramics and architectural stucco facades of the lowland regions to the east. Dotted water signs have been painted on the inside walls of the vessel, surrounding the fish with appropriate iconography. Broad, horizontal symbols are painted on the outside walls and recall much earlier Olmec culture
iconography resembling the bracketed gu ...click for details

The large, ritual utensil showing a female portrait effigy head with a tri-partite coiffure at the top of the handle. Such spoons were prized gifts received by a woman after being recognized as the most generous, giving, hospitable host in the village. A thick, slightly encrusted, black patina covers the spoon and is appropriately worn away at the tip and backside of the scoop area, indicating repetitive use. The face has received organic white paint across the eyes and aluminum teeth have been ...click for details
