This zoomorphic form was used as an entertainment mask during dry season festivals. It is part of the 'locust spirit' gatherings, named because the event brings in 'swarms' of youths to the village. Any male initiate, young or old, can commission such a mask and the fierce competition between these age-grades creates the diversity often seen during the masquerades. Most of the masks are not visually threatening, but are named with rather strong and forceful titles; in the case o ...click for details

$2,800.00

Early in the 20th century, Dan blacksmiths cast small, metal figures to be displayed and flaunted as 'art' objects by their wealthier clients. This old and fine example is made of aluminum, a metal with little intrinsic value in our own culture, but once quite valuable in Sub-Saharan Africa as a prized material obtained from imported goods from Europe. Here, a standing, young female is shown in a pose commonly found among 'favorite spouse' figures, practically nude, but quite con ...click for details

This whitened, Punu group, face mask shows a distinctive double coiffure and flattened face. Keloid scarification marks along the temple areas and forehead indicate this mask represents a female. Such maiden masks are danced by males who wear stilts in order to survey the crowd and watch for adversaries ready to cast their sorcery spells. The masquerade is said to be beautiful to watch and it requires great balance and skill by the dancer, thought to be a gift from birds above. Serpents, with th ...click for details

$3,800.00

A sublime example of the mask representing a royal, male, Chokwe ancestor who was associated with wealth and power. The paddle-like beard seen below the chin is symbolic of a chiefly figure. Showing great age. Varied, somewhat weathered patina, overall; the surface shows much use and handling. Traces of organic white pigment in the mouth. Very fine example. 9.75"H x 6.25"W. From D.R.Congo / Angola. Provenance: Galerie Mueller, Copenhagen, Denmark, ca. 1988.

The expressive and dynamic wooden dance headdress showing opposing, stylized heads with long, horn-like projections (probably hair braids), linear scarification, and scoop-shaped faces. Such multi-faced or janus-faced headdresses represented the lead flute played during various celebratory and funereal masquerades. Very fine, aged patina with old losses to the very tips of the 'horns' and the base form; old stable 'check' in the wood on one side. Traces of organic (chalk-derived) ...click for details

For the Mossi, masks were used primarily during funerals. This graceful animal head cap (zazaido) from the Mossi people shows the distinct features of a small antelope (duiker). The blackened, pronounced crest between the horns possibly alludes to the coiffure of a Fulani woman or to a rooster's feathered head. The mask headpiece is painted with organic pigments in the classic black, red, and white color triad seen on much West and Central African sculpture. The natural materials used for th ...click for details
