This zoomorphic form was used as an entertainment mask during dry season festivals. It is part of the 'locust spirit' gatherings, named because the event brings in 'swarms' of youths to the village. Any male initiate, young or old, can commission such a mask and the fierce competition between these age-grades creates the diversity often seen during the masquerades. An excellent, old example with layers of writing on both sides. Silky smooth, honey-brown, aged patina from years of use. The carved arched finial with dramatic presence. Measuring 19"L x 9"W, in very fine condition; traces of adhesive tape residue on one side. Provenance: Collected by the late Kathryn J. Rex while living in Nigeria, ca. 1960's.

Early in the 20th century, Dan blacksmiths cast small, metal figures to be displayed and flaunted as 'art' objects by their wealthier clients. This old and fine example is made of aluminum, a metal with little intrinsic value in our own culture, but once quite valuable in Sub-Saharan Africa as a prized material obtained from imported goods from Europe. This whitened, Punu group, face mask shows a distinctive double coiffure and flattened face. Keloid scarification marks along the temple areas and forehead indicate this mask represents a female. Such maiden masks are danced by males who wear stilts in order to survey the crowd and watch for adversaries ready to cast their sorcery spells. A sublime example of the mask representing a royal, male, Chokwe ancestor who was associated with wealth and power. The paddle-like beard seen below the chin is symbolic of a chiefly figure. Showing great age. Varied, somewhat weathered patina, overall; the surface shows much use and handling. Traces of organic white pigment in the mouth. Very fine example. 9.75"H x 6.25"W. The expressive and dynamic wooden dance headdress showing opposing, stylized heads with long, horn-like projections (probably hair braids), linear scarification, and scoop-shaped faces. Such multi-faced or janus-faced headdresses represented the lead flute played during various celebratory and funereal masquerades. For the Mossi, masks were used primarily during funerals. This graceful animal head cap (zazaido) from the Mossi people shows the distinct features of a small antelope (duiker). The blackened, pronounced crest between the horns possibly alludes to the coiffure of a Fulani woman or to a rooster's feathered head.
