Of unusual form consisting of an antelope head as the helmet portion of the mask, and a small, fully-realized antelope hovering above as the headpiece superstructure. Bobo blacksmiths carve and wear a variety of animal masks during funerals, initiation ceremonies, or during planting and harvesting times in the village. This example is quite old as evidenced by the heavy, hard wood it is made from, as well as the shiny, deep brown surface visible on the central shaft connecting the animal forms, ...click for details

This wood sculpture was created to guard against sorcery, evil and illness. Its role was a protective one and it was most likely placed on or around an altar as part of a group of various 'bateba' figures. The precise meaning of each figure's shape and posture will never be known, since these carvings were created as the result of a seers vision for an afflicted individual who was suffering a particular malady. Grey-brown, slightly encrusted, sacrificial patina, overall. The lower le ...click for details

Such carved figures are "exaggerated in their form....always shining with oil and composed of flat surfaces, cubes, cones and cylinders which join up sharp angles. They are sculpted with their clothing, pearls, metal jewels, and scarifications on the body. They refer to the young ...click for details

This zoomorphic form was used as an entertainment mask during dry season festivals.
It is part of the 'locust spirit' gatherings, named because the event brings in 'swarms' of youths to the village. Any male initiate, young or old, can commission such a mask and the fierce competition between these age-grades creates the diversity often seen during the masquerades. Most of the masks are not visually threatening, but are named with rather strong and forceful titles; in the case o ...click for details

A sublime example of the mask representing a royal, male, Chokwe ancestor who was associated with wealth and power. The paddle-like beard seen below the chin is symbolic of a chiefly figure. Showing great age. Varied, somewhat weathered patina, overall; the surface shows much use and handling. Traces of organic white pigment in the mouth. Very fine example. 9.75"H x 6.25"W. From D.R.Congo / Angola. Provenance: Galerie Mueller, Copenhagen, Denmark, ca. 1988.
