The masks made by the Salampasu people are related to the warrior's society and are used during initiation and circumcision ceremonies held at forest lodges. They are, intentionally, disquieting images meant to frighten and distract with aggressive bulging foreheads, blunt, triangular noses, and sharp features. The rectangular mouths, exhibit filed teeth. Our example has been painted with red, black, and white pigments. It is notable for its dynamic expression and elegant shape. The mas ...click for details

Because they dealt with the spiritual world, their power was respected and feared and became a precision instrument used for the good of curing various problems for individuals and the community. These realistically rendered masks, such as this exceptional example, were believed to transmit authority and knowledge to the diviner who wore it while making a ...click for details

Anthropomorphic and zoomorphic caryatid stools showing three figures were widely used among the local chiefs and male elders in Western Pende villages. However, these objects have rarely appeared in collections since it is believed most were buried with their owners. The four figures on this stool, a standing male, a seated male, and a standing male and female couple, express the idea that chiefly power was directly linked to the will of the people. A lively interplay of cubist forms distingui ...click for details

Most examples of Eastern Pende carved wooden masks existed in deep secrecy among the population. The exact purpose of many types varied regionally, and many had double functions, existing as both dance masks and architectural sculpture. This is in direct opposition of the mask forms made by the Western Pende, which functioned, consistently, in open, public displays. This wonderful example, showing the geometric stylization typical of Eastern Pende art, probably performed during initiation rit ...click for details

There is an avi-form quality to this rare, otherwise, anthropomorphic mask. It was used by members of a Luba healing society known as 'Buyembe.' These specialists worked closely with royal 'Bilumbu' diviners. When a 'Bilumbu' diviner determined the cause of a client's misfortune, a 'Buyembe' member was usually called upon to make a medicinal cure for the distraught individual. Many prescriptions involved powerful ingredients added to increase one's life ...click for details

The Ga'anda people of northeastern Nigeria are one of many groups who make a variety of unique ritual and sacred ceramic effigy vessels. This area of Nigeria, especially within the Gongola Valley, has been relatively ignored by scholars of African art history and anthropology until quite recently. In the past 25 or so years, the richness of their terracotta creations is beginning to reveal the fascinating history of the region. Known as "mbirhlen'nda," these anthropomorphic ...click for details

This double-figure, representing a man and woman standing back-to-back, was believed to have protective powers, bring fertility, communicate with deceased ancestors, and to copulate and conceive rather monstrous beings. There is a receptacle at the top of the figure for fetish materials placed there to 'feed' the figure and keep it active. The features on this example are quite naturalistic and developed for the type. Stylistically, it most resembles figures coming from the northwester ...click for details
