This ancient example of Khmer Hindu figurative carving has a wonderfully soft, subtle roundness after eight hundred or so years. The face of the male deity, that is, "Balarama", is very calm and meditative. He is Krishna's older brother, and he is carrying a hoe because he is known as the 'plowman'. Apparently missing the upper right arm since antiquity, the bust fragment is in otherwise very good condition and retains its details very nicely. It appears the nose was damage ...click for details

The fleshy face showing similar features found on larger 'Mbuya' masks made of wood. Coffee-bean eyes with a continuous brow above, bulging forehead, a pendulous nose, and filed teeth in a slightly open, grinning mouth make this example a classic Pende carving in miniature. Facial scarification is indicated by circular cuts in the forehead and each cheek. The maskette is semi-flat on the reverse and shows a lustrous, softened patina overall, from much wear as an object with protective qu ...click for details

The Huastec peoples are linguistically related to the Mayas, separated from the peninsular Mayan-speaking groups as early as the beginnings of the Olmec Horizon, circa BCE 1500. One, if not both of the two enigmatic, somewhat lifeless faces seen on this well-modeled and unusually elaborate Postclassic period ceramic may represent the Mesoamerican act of whistling to the storm gods as a petition for soaking rains. This same tradition is documented today in parts of Veracruz and in the Maya world ...click for details
