Two Papua New Guinea clam shell currency rings
The larger example is of Abelam or Boiken origin and has been incised along the edge of the central opening with simple lines which possibly symbolize a hornbill crane. Patina is polished smooth and silky from decades of handling and use. 7.50" Diameter. Late 19th century / early 20th century. Intact and perfect. The smaller, thicker ring is from Nissan Island, located off the coast of Papua New Guinea. It, too, is made from clam shell and has a creamy, smooth surface, but is not as highly polished as the former example. 3.25" Diameter. Intact and excellent condition. Late 19th / early 20th century.
