A fine Tetela dagger
A heavy knob of iron has been added to the pommel of this elegant blade. The owner of this particular weapon was prestigious enough to have copper added to the handle grip. Hand-held weapons are found in all regions of Africa, but their possession was regulated by strict codes, allowing only tribal and military chiefs the right to carry them or dispense them. A wonderfully refined example. D.R.Congo, late 19th century, measuring 15"L x 4.75"W, maximum. In very fine condition with some old loss to the sheet copper on one side.
