| A medium hard wood figure representing a male ancestor, showing a classic, static posture, hair topknot, and prominent beard. Such cubist-looking sculptures come from the Teke and Yanzi people who were once part of the Tio Kingdom in western D.R. Congo. This type of figure (butti) has a hollow in the torso region to allow for the placement of various magical 'bilongo' materials believed to give the figure its potency. 14.25"H, in very fine condition with a varied, deep brown, shiny, aged patina; areas of encrustation present. Provenance: Old Florida private collection since the 1970's. | |||||||||||||
