| This ornately detailed example of a Baule flywhisk resembles a short scepter. It was a prestigious implement for a village chief or similarly high-ranking official. Such objects were displayed openly during public ceremonies, where they functioned to announce the status of their owner. A hen, probably a chicken or possibly a Guinea Fowl, perches on the corseted handle, replacing the more typical parrot. There is an inscription with the name (?) 'KonakrA' and it is dated '1961'. Rudimentary, enigmatic, janiform heads are placed at the juncture between the handle and the flaring top. Excellent condition with a deep, varied, darkened, aged patina. 16" in height, excluding the simple wood block mount. Rarely seen type. From Ivory Coast, West Africa.
