| A rare type of figurative effigy vessel from the highlands of Colombia with abstracted forms compressed and tense, not unlike a "Jack-in-the-box" toy. Tiny zoomorphic forms hug the edge. Perhaps this effigy form is an allusion to a mythological creation story? Imagery from this region of the Americas is still far from analyzed. The fired earthenware effigy with brick-red and cream paint is both enigmatic and pleasing. It dates to CE 1000-1500. Vessel measures 8.75"H x 6.50"Diameter, and is in fine condition, with a small (3/4") ancient loss to the bottom edge, and a small, stable, ancient stress crack resulting from the damage. There is some slight disintegration of the slip along the bottom of the vessel, as well. A small, ancient loss to the very tip of the nose, with a more recent tiny loss on the interior of the mouth rim and along the left ear. Provenance: Old collection, Florida, since the 1970's. | |||||||
