A superb Yaka-Lula janiform slit gong
Carved from a dense, hard wood, this ritual idiophone has been finely made with a janiform finial showing faces with similar features. An open slit on each side, each with ample remains of organic white pigment on the interior. A sacred sounding instrument used by a diviner, not a musician. From the D.R.Congo, early 20th C. Showing an exceptional shiny, reddish brown, aged patina. 17.75"H, excluding the custom base. In very fine condition with some slight abrasions to the high point areas. PROVENANCE: GALLERY DE ROCHE, SAN FRANCISCO CA, LATE 1980'S.
