| The horizontal crest mask showing a hybridized, fantastical antelope creature in crouching position with exaggerated head and horns. From the Bamako or Beledugu region of Mali. Showing a fine, aged, medium brown, varied patina. Head is articulated at the neck using small, metal straps. Measures 20.50"L x 12"H x 4"W. This Chi'Wara was collected in-situ among the Bamana peoples by Eliot Elisofon, in about the early 1950's. Elisofon was a well-known photographer and film-maker who documented life in Africa 1947-1972. The carved headpiece was in the collection of Peter Pollack, an internationally known writer, historian, photographer and curator, and was given to him by Elisofon in the 1960's. In very fine, intact condition with some losses commensurate with age and use. The sculpture dates to the early 20th C. | ||||||||
