|The fleshy face showing similar features found on larger 'Mbuya' masks made of wood. Coffee-bean eyes with a continuous brow above, bulging forehead, a pendulous nose, and filed teeth in a slightly open, grinning mouth make this example a classic Pende carving in miniature. Facial scarification is indicated by circular cuts in the forehead and each cheek. The maskette is semi-flat on the reverse and shows a lustrous, softened patina overall, from much wear as an object with protective qualities. Once strung on a glass bead necklace, this ivory pendant dates to the early 20th C. Collected in the 1950's in the D.R.Congo, and part of an old European private collection. Dimensions of the pendant are 2"H x 1.50"W. Intact, very fine condition.|
