A Superb Bongo Commemorative Figure for a Man
This unusual composition represents a deceased male ancestor who has successfully lived his life and contributed to the community. The stacked forms supporting the portrait head symbolize the animals or possibly the enemies that were slain by him in life. The large pair of antelope horns, perhaps alluding to after-death transformation or an animal alter ego, add a surreal quality to this sculpture. Brancusi-like in its abstractness, this fine memorial post is in very good, somewhat weathered condition. It comes from southern Sudan and probably dates to the early 20th century. 40"H. Made from a heavy and dense section of wood.
