| Related to the Lega , Kumu, Pere, and Nande peoples, the Nyanga group is part of the northeastern tradition of D.R.Congo. Friendly relations exist between all of these peoples and they share many cultural beliefs. They have no supreme being but rather numerous cults including ancestral, twin, fire, river spirit etc. The concave, whitened face plane of this rare object has been liberally powdered with a micaceous kaolin pigment while the rest of the sculptures patina is a gray-brown. This most unusual hollow, anthropomorphic form was cared for after the large 'check' in the face occurred. Its surface showing heavy evidence of use and good age. Measuring 12.25" H x 8" W, the helmet form has suffered a loss of the left eye's raised ridge surround ( it has been broken away in recent times) otherwise the split in the face is stable and solid. From the Maniema region of D.R.Congo, central Africa, early-mid 20th century, conservatively. Collected in the Nyanga zone as indicated on the paper collection tag placed there in the 1960's when it was field collected. This is a monumental form emitting presence and power. | ||||||||
