| Delicately carved from a single section of wood, this openwork 'kashekesheke' figure was used as a divination instrument. Typically, it was held by the diviner and a participant and moved rapidly between their fingers, rubbing the flared bottom on a selected surface, usually a woven mat upon which both people were seated. The fortune was told depending on the final resting position of the oracle device. This beautiful example comes from the Luba-Upemba region of D.R.Congo. The two-tier coiffure on the serenely elegant female head is classic for the style, more often referred to as Luba-Shaba. Made from a yellowish wood which has now acquired a silky smooth surface from much handling and use. A copper band and some cobalt blue glass trade beads were added to make the oracle figure more effective. 7.75" H. Early-mid 20th century. | |||||||||
