| Thick hide shields played a major part in ritual warfare and head-hunting raids among the Konyak Nagas of the northern region of Nagaland. They were also used during ceremonial dances held at Spring Festivals, where men would flaunt their fighting moves and reenact battles. This strong and sturdy hide shield has been painted with a 'fleur-de-lis' design in thick, white, organic pigment. Its foliated form is reminiscent of the body tattoos on men who achieved status by taking a head. The tassels along the top are dyed goat hair and have been inserted and glued into holes punched-through the leather. A sturdy rattan grip is still intact on the reverse, showing much age and handling. The shield measures 35"H x 15"W. It is in excellent overall condition with some losses to the edges and to the painted design - typical of wear found on older, used examples. Early 20th century. Mounted. | |||||||||
