| This trumpet was used for announcing to fellow villagers that a successful raid on an enemy village had taken place. From the second largest island in the world-New Guinea, comes this exquisitely decorated hardwood trumpet with a bird head effigy finial. In Papua New Guinea, the eastern half of the island, especially along the course of the Sepik River which runs from the central area of the island to the northeast, objects were traded regularly between the various peoples who inhabit its banks and travel its waters. This makes it quite impossible to thoroughly describe and catalog the mix of elements seen on objects from this area. All of the forms seen on this trumpet have a significance beyond that of mere decoration. The entire surface of this wind instrument is carved with a beautiful opposing scroll pattern with eye-like forms between. The very fine encrusted and darkened, deep patina indicates great age and much handling. Early 20th century, measuring 19.25"L x 4"W at the opening. Made from a hard, heavy wood, the horn is in very fine condition overall with two very old, stable, 3" hairline 'checks' running-up from the opening along both sides.
