A Kikuyu wooden shield for initiation
Adolescent boys wear these shield forms on their upper arms as they undergo male initiation rites. Each shield was carved in low relief and then painted by family members. The serrated patterning on the inside was the only constant; front decoration changed yearly. These shields eventually became heirloom items. From Kenya. Early-mid 20th century. 27.25" H x 18.50" W. Fine condition showing good age and use overall. A beautiful form.
