| A classic example of a northern Dan face mask from Ivory Coast, West Africa, showing large, round eyes framed by cut metal rings. Dan peoples from both sides of the border between Liberia and Ivory Coast share a common mythology about the origin of mask forms (ge) coming from the creator being (Zlan). Masks are considered a bridge between humans and humans and their ancestors. They are viewed as supernatural beings able to help resolve many different kinds of problems and issues. Sacred masks must be taken care of and treated with great respect, otherwise they could take revenge. Facial features of most Dan masks are a combination of male and female characteristics and idealized representations. Stylized or portrait-like, each mask exudes a distinctive personality among the exaggerated or de-emphasized facial elements. Showing great age and a deep patina, the somewhat fragile appearance of this old mask belies its extensive and rigorous use in many village masquerades. 8"H x 5"W. Ivory Coast, early 20th century. Provenance: Old Florida private collection, purchased more than 30 years ago. | |||||||
