A fine Guro 'zamble' helmet-crest mask
For the Guro people living in Ivory Coast, West Africa, male and female masks are danced together as couples. Not that surprising, except the male in this type of masquerade is represented by a zoomorphic, composite image. This zamble mask is a classic example of the type which combines the profile and horns of an antelope and the jaws of a leopard. However, the mask has a far less ferocious appearance than one would expect. His wife, his female counterpart, 'gu,' is always shown with beautiful, aquiline, feminine features. Sometimes the two are danced with the wild brother of zamble, known as 'zuli.' When not in use, these masks are presented with sacrificial offerings by clients seeking better health or fortune, the exact ingredients and manner of presentation dictated by village diviners. This helmet crest mask has been carved from a fine, hardwood with exacting precision, then painted with a mix of oil-based paints and organic pigments. The interior of this mask is a lustrous color of amber, attesting to long use and loving care. 18"L and in very fine condition with a softened, aged surface. The left horn tip shows indigenous repair. Provenance: Loudmer, Paris, ca.1990 sale. Mask is early-mid 20th century. Custom mount.
