A rare Ishan face mask (Agbodogin)
The Ishan live outside the limits of Benin City. Their village life is in stark contrast to the royal pomp and circumstance of the Benin Kingdom. Their masquerades celebrate heroes, heroines, and deities that fought the control of Benin and its kings. Not surprisingly, the masquerades and masks are strictly controlled by the Kingdom, and are allowed to perform at only specific periods during the year. This example shows the classic features of an early example: ears placed high and cut-out, pronounced mouth with inset teeth (reed), deep brow with large, slanting eyes, exaggerated, broad nose, stacked coiffure, and emphasized beard. The surface is darkened and encrusted with remains of the fatty oil and white pigment application overall. Measuring 11.50"H x 7"W. From Nigeria, early 20th century. Provenance: Florida private collection since the 1970's.
