| An Extremely Rare Gouache of Shanghai,The Bund.Circa 1860. 'Gouache' of The Bund At Shanghai On the Huangpu River. Precisely Showing the Bust Waterfront, numerous steamers and sailing ships flying the Union Jack and two Paddle Steamers flying the American Stars and Stripes, one inscribed "Fire.Cracker.", the lengthy promenade dotted with figures engaged in day-to-day activities and set with the foreign concessions and Chinese counting house, a third American sailing Ship also flying the American Flag and a Company Flag inscribed "E". The Original Frame 54" X 26",Period gilt and Lacquered Wood Chippendale Frame,Under Glass. Before photography arrived in the 1840'S, Paintings and Gouaches were the only way Traders could show life in China to the family back home in the West. From the Middle of the 18TH Century, Trade had increased between China and England, America and Countries in Europe for Tea,Porcelain and Silk and led to curiosity about life in the Exotic East. Guangzhou (Canton) was the only port in China open to the West, and wives and children were not allowed there, sometimes staying in Macau. Recently a painting that is very similar to this painting sold at a Southern Auction in the United States. That one was attributed to the Shanghai Painter, Chow Kwa who was a Active Artist from 1850-1880. That one was described as the view of the Shanghai Bund, Very similar to this scene. We feel that this gouache is attributed to Kwa. All of the images have been taken by a Professional Photographer in my Home Town of Lewes, De.,which is the First Town in the First State of USA. These images can be emailed to interested parties. We can be contacted at (443) 250-0930 Or by e-mail at mimisantiques@comcast.net. | |||||||||||||||
