Chinese Iron Hu Vase with Inlaid Silver Designs

This listing is for a rare Iron Hu Vase (wine vessel), with a dark patina, and decorated with inlaid silver. The shape of the vessel is in the style of the Chinese Warring States Period. The lip of the base has a Greek Key design with inlaid silver, followed by a band of flowers around the throat. There are stylized “mythological animal head” handles on each side with gilt eyes, and large metal loops. The vase is also decorated with a wide band of three “T’ou-T’ieh” mask panels divided by notched raised flanges on a thunder cloud design ground, and inlaid silver throughout. The vase measures 10” H x 8-1/2” W (handle to handle) x 7-3/4” Diameter; and weighs 5.10 lbs. Condition is very good, with some rust and very old dried, encrusted mud on the interior. There is also some roughness on the lip and foot of the vase from the original casting process. The vase was purchased by former collector/owner at an auction in Europe during the 1990’s. Age of the vessel is c.19th century.
