Korean Silla Stoneware Covered Jar (5th - 6th Century)
Ancient, rare Korean stoneware lidded jar that was made during the Three Kingdoms period, 57 BC - AD 668, (between the 5th and 6th century AD), by residents of the Silla Kingdom in the south-east of Korea. This type of high-fired stoneware is typical of that period. The outer and inner surfaces are coated with a thin ash glaze, some of which is still visible in several places. Mounted on the top of the lid is a raised round knob with an inward curvature on the sides and within the top. The lid is decorated with two raised bands that have a stippled design within each band. The body of the jar is supported by a base that has four rectangular holes that are 1” wide x 1-1/2” high. The inside of the jar has a black carbon residue on top of rust orange colored buildup that could be from iron content in the fired clay. The photos provide a better description than I could possibly make. It is obviously a very early example of Korean stoneware. The height of the jar with the lid is 6-1/2” and the diameter is 5-1/2”. It weighs 1.5 lbs. Condition: The jar has a “u” shaped hairline crack on the lid that appears to have an old repair, and there are minor rim chips around the edge of the lid and the top of the bowl. Considering the age of this piece it is good condition overall. We previously acquired several similar vessels that were part of the Bessie Marie Harris Collection, and had been on exhibit in the Oklahoma City Museum of Art from 1970-1988. This one is in better condition than some of the museum pieces. The jar comes with a very old, custom made wood box. Affixed to the top of the box was an old yellowed business card with the printed name of a Brigadier General, Republic of Korea Army.
