| Ivory “Oliphant” decorative horn, carved from an elephant tusk, with four recessed bands, and outer applications of gilt braised metal ormolu of finely designed flowers, maple leaves and scrolling vines with a flower button. This Oliphant has a metal cone shaped metal mouthpiece covering the tip that gives the appearance of a real horn, and has a fine linked chain that is attached to each end of the tusk that enable it to be hung for display purposes. Oliphant is a word derived from an old French word meaning “Elephant”. The earliest Oliphant “hunting horns” were carved in Italy beginning as early as the 11th century from a whole African ivory elephant tusk and hollowed for use as a horn to produce a low but loud call. Medieval Oliphant horns were considered as prized symbols of wealth and power, made for royalty, including European Kings and Emperors, and later presented as gifts to high ranking, visiting dignitaries. After being passed down for generations, medieval Oliphant horns can be found in some of the most of prestigious museums in Europe. The size/weight is: 21”L x 2-1/2”Diameter at base; 3.4 lbs. Condition: There are signs of age from stress lines in the small end of the tusk and there is one long age line on the top. There are also some small frits, and mini chips along the upper edges of the four recessed bands. Circa 1880, 19th century. No shipping will be made outside of the United States. | |||||||||||||
