A Pair of P. E. Guerin Brass Andirons, New York City 20th Century
Classically formed brass andirons surmounted by an urn over a tapering square standard supported by modified cabriole legs with rectangular paw feet. The back support is made of forged iron. The pieces are unmarked, however the quality is identical to the pieces P. E. Guerin are famous for.

The pensive work shows an elongated Latin cross with the form of a crucified Christ. Above Christ, lies the titulus with the Latin acronym, INRI. This translation from the book of John translates to, as proclaimed by Pilate, “Jesus of Nazarus King of the Jews.” The somber cast brass work elegantly stands upon a circular graduated and lobed pediment.
