An Oil on Canvas, Winter Landscape by Emile A. Gruppe (1896 – 1978) b. Rochester New York.

Provenance, This painting was previously sold at Vixseboxse Gallery of Cleveland, Ohio. Size: 33 ¾” high 38 ¾” wide (framed) 26” high 31” wide (canvas) Condition: Excellent, frame with minor touch up. Emile is known for his great works that include landscapes, marine paintings, figures and portraits. The son of Charles Gruppe, Emile was destine to be an artist, as each of Emile’s siblings was in the arts. Emile’s work was founded not only as the son of an artist and art dealer, living in the Netherlands, but trained formally upon their return to the United States, through classes at the Art Student League, with additional training in landscape methods with John Carlson in Woodstock, New. He also studied with Richard Miller in Paris and with Charles Hawthorne in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Gruppe’s modern style was largely inherited from French Impressionist Claude Monet. Looking at some of his work you can see that influence. Emile ventured to Gloucester Massachusetts in the 1930’s to paint the harbors and backwoods of this small fishing village. He founded The Gloucester School of Painting (1940 – 1970), with a second site for his students in the Village of Cambridge and in the town of the Jeffersonville in Vermont. When Emile grew older the warmth of Florida beckoned him and he moved to Naples, FL.
