A Set of Five Fish Shaped Porcelain Bone Dishes, Japan, 19th Century
This set of five fish shaped dishes are traditionally used in a place setting as a place to deposit fish bones. In a modern context, they would be delightful as a soy dish or chopstick rest. Each dish is in an ovoid fish shape. The head and gills enclose one side of the dish. The body of the fish is absent, allowing the shallow part of the dish to be revealed. The fish tail curls in an upturned manner. Each dish is composed of porcelain in a transparent cobalt blue glaze. The base of each bone dish is unglazed. The detail of each is apparent in the attention to the eyes, gills, scales and, fins. This set is whimsical, literal and, utilitarian. Size: 1 ½” in height, 5 ¾” in length and, 3” in width. Condition: Excellent. Price: $500.00 |
