Thai Standing Buddha, Sand Cast Gilt Bronze, 19th Century
This gilt bronze Buddha exudes an austere and contemplative quality. This work is a superb example of the Southeast Asian, more specifically the Thai, visual interpretation of Buddhists Icon Art. This Buddha is a Standing Buddha. His head displays the Asnisa, the spike-like protrusion. Buddha’s hair is short and of tight stylized curls. The Buddha’s ears are distended, his eyes are shut and, his mouth displays a subtle smile. He dons a streamlined monastic robe. This Standing Buddha is barefoot and, stands atop a lotus blossom. The sculpture sits upon a filled hexagonal felt lined base. The Buddha’s mudra is ramphueng; his hands are crossed and placed over his chest. This mudra is particular to the conventions of Thailand. This represents a contemplation of the suffering in the world; the Thai associate this with the day Friday. This bronze work was originally monochrome in gilt gold. There has been mild ware but this only adds to the piece’s dignified character. The work is sold with an accompanying black painted hexagonal wood stand, for display. Size: 19 ½” in height (no display stand), stand is 3 ½ “ in height and 7 ½” in width. Condition: Excellent, ware in gilt, chip on base exposing interior. Price: $1,800.00 Sale $800.00 |
