Tabletop Cast Bronze Depicting The Horse Tamer Marble,by Nicolas Coustou, French, c.1900
This classic tabletop cast bronze statuette is a replica of the Baroque marble statuary of Nicolas Coustou for the gardens of Chateau Marly, Yvelines, a residence of the French royalty. This cast bronze statuette shows the drama of a wild and bucking stallion. The horse stands on its hind legs, the mane and tail billow and, an animal skin is slewn across the horse’s back as a makeshift saddle. The young classisized male horse tamer wrestles with the horse’s reigns. This action takes place upon a pediment that is stamped “COUSTOU.” The cast bronze shows a rich brown red patina. The original Baroque marble masterwork was done as a pair, executed in 1740-1745. The marbles were moved to Place de la Concorde then presently into The Louvre. Cast bronze tabletop replications of marble statuary were the rage of the nineteenth century. An individual may not be able to acquire an original Classic or Renaissance marbles but one may acquire a small bronze copy more easily. Size: 13” in height Condition: Excellent Price: $800.00 USD |
