A Pair of Fruit Wood Console Tables, Italian Late 18th Century

This magnificent pair of console tables have a rectangular top with notched corners over a conforming apron. A lion’s head that is hand carved and gilded centers each side. The lower portion is finished with a carved gilt wood molding. The table is raised on six tapering square legs the splay near the end and are joined by a conforming stretcher. The back’s of each table have two labels each. The top label (which reads more clearly) probably reads Giovanni Grimaldi. Grimaldi was the Governor of the Republic of Genoa in 1753. These items may have been a part of their household inventory and for that reason the tables were tagged.

The home that these tables may have occupied is now a national gallery and was donated to the state. The Grimaldi family occupied the home from the 16th to the 18th century. The Spinola Family purchased the palazzo during the 18th century. The Spinola family donated the building and the contents in 1958 to the state to be used as a national gallery.

Condition: Excellent. First table has a small shallow nick, surface scratches; old replaced veneer on side of top, slight leftting to the veneer on the opposite side of top and possibly a replaced lions head. Second table has a scratch on top, front right apron with veneer crack and repair (crack is on veneer only), minor shrinkage to the veneer at the top right corner. Size: 36” high, 47” wide, 22 ¾” deep
