Oil on Canvas, Portrait, Minerva Josephine Chapman (American 1858 – 1947)

"Lady in Lace, Wearing a Delicate Gossamer-Trimmed Hat, Paris". This portrait with mysterious qualities is painted in neutral shades of taupe and brown with a hint of red revealing a woman wearing a hat and lacy collar. A shadow obscures the details of her face. Like most Chapman paintings, this too is unsigned. Provenance, Santa Fe East Gallery (with gallery tag on verso) and private Cleveland, Ohio collection. In 1906 she was one of the first American women elected a member of France’s Salon of the Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts. Her work, although not well know has been celebrated by exhibitions at the National Museum of Woman in the Arts, Mount Holyoke College and in European Exhibitions.
