Oil on Canvas, Landscape, Minerva Josephine Chapman (American 1858 – 1947)

“A Poplar-Lined Road at Sunset, France ". A back road of France is depicted in subtle colors with hints of blue and rose. The dip and the curve of the road pull you into the painting. Like most paintings this one is unsigned. Provenance, Santa Fe East Gallery (with gallery tag on verso) and private Cleveland, Ohio collection. In 1906 she was one of the first American women elected a member of France’s Salon of the Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts. Her work, although not well know has been celebrated by posthumous exhibitions at the National Museum of Woman in the Arts and Mount Holyoke College. During Chapman’s life her work was exhibited at World's Columbian Expo (Chicago), 1893; Paris Salon, 1899-1926; Société Nationale des Beaux Arts (Paris), 1897, 1905, 1909; Pan-American Expo (Buffalo), 1901; Panama-Calif. Expo (San Diego), 1915 (two gold medals); Palo Alto Art Club, 1929 (solo); Calif. Society of Min. Painters, 1929 (gold medal), 1931 (1st prize), 1936; Century of Progress Expo (Chicago), 1933; County Fair (LA), 1935.
