A Sterling Silver Trophy, Gorham, circa 1912

The classic shape of a tapering form flanked by angular handles is raised on a short stem and supported by a square base. The body of the trophy is engraved, Presented to, William P. Bidle, by, His Associates, In The , Cleveland City Forge and Iron Co, As a Token of, Friendship, Sept. 12th 1912.” The verso is marked with Gorham’s hallmarks and “STERLING 8 A, 5 PINTS.” The date mark of 1911, a pipe is also stamped on the verso.

William Sanford Bidle (d. 1941) was very involved with the manufacturing of metals in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Bidle worked for Cleveland City Forge and Iron in 1904 and sat on several boards dealing with metal manufacturing including the American Society for Metals (ASM) as the President in 1925. Bidle also operated a company located in Cleveland, Ohio at 1411 East 45th Street that created equipment for the heat treatment, hardening and annealing of metals. He was a member of the Cleveland Engineering Society.
