1962 Austin Cox Chess Set with Board for Alcoa
A strikingly beautiful, modernist chess set designed by Austin Cox of Austin Enterprises for ALCOA (Aluminum Association of America) in 1962. These fully functional sets were created for advertising the many uses of aluminum and were given as gifts for ALCOA's top customers. The set features 32 chess pieces displayed in a 30 ¾ by 6” walnut case, enclosed by the original blue plexiglass cover that slides out, allowing access to the set. Also included is the original blue felt chess board with aluminum sides which measures 19 1/8 square. The chess pieces were cut from aluminum bars; the white appearing in a natural finish, with the black differentiated by black anodized sides with natural aluminum faces. All chess pieces bear a stamp on their undersides: 1962 Austin Enterprises. In excellent condition, with some minor scrapes to walnut case and sliding lid, this set is the ultimate in fine 20th century design, and is hard to find complete and in such good condition.
